We would like to thank all of you who made it for the HOLI event last Sunday. It was really a huge success and a moral booster for us. Your presence glorified the festival in the true meaning. If you have any pictures or videos for the event which you would like to share with us, do send us at india@usc.edu. We would be glad to put those on our website.

Asha-LA invites you to read our winter newsletter (attached). Newsletters are windows to the activities and methods of Asha for Education and the current edition contains updates from two projects written by volunteers who have been associated with them for several years. The Basera-e-Tabassum project supports hostels for orphan children in violence hit areas of Jammu and Kashmir. The Street-to-school project aims to bring street children in the Kalighat area in Kolkata out of slums through education. In addition, the newsletter reports on a very successful 5k run that we organized in September'08, and plan to repeat this year.

A fun fact: Slumdog Millionaire's little Salim and Latika are first grade students at an Asha funded school in Bandra maintained by our partner Aseema.

We would like to remind you all about the HOLI festival which we are going to celebrate this Sunday @ Huntington Beach. We all are fortunate enough to celebrate our festival on a foreign land. What more can one ask for? We would like your presence so as to glorify the festival(See attached flyer for more details). Buses from USC will be provided (departing from behind Leavey Library) - due to an overwhelming response, bus seats will be filled on a first-come first-serve basis, so be sure to get there by 10 am! For those of you still on the fence, remember there will be FREE food and Holi colors at the beach!

The Executive Board of the Association of Indian Students is looking for new senators. The senators are recruited now in order to have a smooth transition when the current board leaves. LITERACY DAY – IMPACT THE LIFE OF A CHILD!

A local elementary school is inviting USC international students to participate in their Literacy Day on Friday morning, April 3rd. The children are from lower income families and the purpose of Literacy Day is to encourage reading, help them to dream about going to college someday and give them the chance to meet someone from another country.

Research Participation Opportunity

Carly Mattefs is a second year Postsecondary Administration/ Student Affairs Masters student here at USC. Event: Hunger Clean-Up

The Cleanup is one of the largest national fundraising and community service a-thons in the country. Through the Cleanup, students will roll up their sleeves and grab paintbrushes, hammers, and rakes to volunteer at local hunger and homelessness relief agencies. Volunteer projects include painting local shelters, planting community gardens, repairing and cleaning food banks, and construction.

We would like to thank all the attendees of the AIS Republic Day ceremony and the AIS Movie Screening event. The response was great and we expect more from you all in future AIS events. If you have any feedback on the event - positive or negative, please feel free to email us at india@usc.edu. We would also like to inform that there has been a change in the schedule for the Career Guidance Session called the "Tech Talk" and now we are having it on this Sunday, February 8th. In this session few of our alumni and other people from the industry would give you tips on resume building, job search etc. that would be quite useful for all of you just before the career fair.

We all have been tracking the news about the terrorist attacks which happened in Mumbai in the past few days. We at AIS are writing to express our concern about the situation of our members. We hope that none of your family or friends are affected by this tragic event. We are ready to offer any help to the people who are affected by this incident.

Also, AIS and USC Office of Religious Life have organized a hosting a multi-faith memorial service and candlelight vigil to mourn the victims of the Mumbai attack - tomorrow (Tuesday, 12/2) at 5 PM at the University Church. The event is open to the entire USC community. We hope that all of us will unite and pray for peace.

Research project on Asian Indian identity

Hello, My name is Jinghuan Liu. I'm from a multi-cultural research company called New American Dimensions.

I was wondering if any of you would like to participate in our research project on Asian Indian identity. We're setting up in-depth interviews with students at USC. The project is to probe into the modern Asian Indian identity: world citizen, educated, savvy, confident, unpretentious, a good balance between Americanization and Indian traditions. We will have a face-to-face interview with the participant, asking him/her questions, which usually runs from 45 minutes to 1 hour. We'll conduct the interviews on campus next week at your convenience.

AROUND THE WORLD 80 MINUTES EXTRAVAGANZA

Around the World in 80 Minutes Extravaganza (AW80ME) is a weekly program on Sundays (beginning 10/12) at 5:30 pm in the Parkside Large Classroom. This program is geared toward getting Language Academy students (international students who are at USC to learn English) and USC students to interact in cultural and language exchange.

The two main goals of this program are to 1.) allow Language Academy students to find friends to practice their English with, and 2.) for USC students who are interested in learning another language to find native speakers of that language to learn from.

Each week there will be a different culturally themed refreshment as well as a group of phrases to be learned in each language represented. Although Language Academy students come from China, Taiwan, Korean, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, we are inviting every language department at USC to send representatives so that any interested student can learn (almost) any language they are interested in.

I am a reporter with the LA Times and am working on a story about the use of biodata in South Asian marriages. From my research and speaking with friends, I understand it is a mix of resume, personal ad and lineage that can spark a meeting between potential spouses. I also understand that often it is driven by the parents.
I would love to speak with some of your members who may have had experience with biodata or even just have opinions about it. How do young South Asians feel about it? Do they feel it is an archaic method or a good way to meet people?

The event is only for AIS members i.e. members who have paid the membership fees! (Please note that the membership fees is annually so last year members, who have not paid the membership fee for year 2008-2009 will have to pay the fees to become AIS member for this year). There will be on the spot membership registration at the event where you can become AIS member on the spot by paying the membership fees. Please note that the membership fees is $10 for the year 2008-2009. This membership allows you to participate and enjoy our other events this year which includes Diwali, Garba, Ice cream social etc. which will be for AIS members only. The entrance fees for Non members for this event is $10 (for this event only!).

We will wait for all the students to be there,

Temporary Accomodation - Your help needed

Hey guys,

First of all, thanks for such a nice responses to show that we are ready to help the new students coming. we have received a good number of responses from people who are willing to volunteer for temporary accommodation and that's a good move. But the important thing is that still the number of volunteers is way less than the number of new students who want temporary accommodation. and most importantly, the biggest constraint is time. we have less than 20 days now when the new students will start arriving. So please come ahead in this step and start supporting. All of you who have not filled in the form and are willing to support the new students by providing them a place for not more than 3 or 4 days please fill in the form at http://www-scf.usc.edu/~india/form_volunteer_accom.php. AIS Temporary Accomodation - 400 Students need your help

Hey,

We hope you had been having a great summer. As it comes closer to the start of the new academic year at USC, we at AIS are planning up for both the events next year as well as trying to help out the new incoming students. As you would be knowing and would have experienced, providing temporary accomodation had always been a big challenge for us. Its indeed sad to say that currently we do not have even a single volunteer for it and we already have 400 new students who are needing temporary accomodation.

We found you through our last year's database for temporary accomodation.You either requested the temporary accomodation or volunteered for it last year. We want you to show the positive response again to help the newcoming students here at USC. We at AIS will try to put in a person who is from the same city/state as yours and also with similar food habits, so that its easier for both of you to interact.

So, please reply to us if you are ready to join hands with AIS in this task which will help you in finding a roomate as well as helping a new incoming student.

As fellow Indian students, it is one of the primary help which every incoming student needs, when they come to USC. Please help us by giving your support in helping one or two of the incoming students by giving them temporary accommodation in your apartment when they land here.

We will also be releasing an online form on the AIS website within a week to make it easier for you to volunteer. We will mail out the details with the next newsletter. Thank you for your support.

SEF iWalk – A Walk for Charity

Have you ever tried to walk down the street with your eyes closed for about 30 seconds? Fortunately, most of us will never have to experience this daunting task because we have normal or close to normal vision. However, about 1/5 of the worlds blind can be found living a painful life in India.

Fortunately, there are organizations like the Sankara Eye Foundation, which are dedicated to helping the visually handicapped. SEF is a non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating curable blindness in India. Although most of this blindness IS curable, many people in rural areas lack access to quality eye care. That is where SEF comes in. The foundation conducts rural outreach eye camps to identify patients, brings them to the nearest Sankara eye care facility and provides comprehensive eye care in addition to providing lodging and food free of cost. They are also given a follow up after a month to assess results. It only takes $30 to perform one sight rectification operation in India. SEF has given this gift to over 57,000 underprivileged Indians in 2007 alone. SEF's motto is "Vision 20/20 by 2020." It aims to establish 20 free eye care centers across the country and conduct over 1.2 million eye surgeries annually by the year 2020. There are SEF hospitals in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Pondicherry, Coimbatore and three more will be finished by 2008 in Anand, Shimoga, and Bangalore.

As students, we have the power to help those in need. Along with many other groups, we are planning a walkathon at UCLA. 100% of the proceeds will go to the SEF. There will be an information night for the walkathon on WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9^th, 2008 from 9-10 PM. SNACKS will be provided!

Hi! My name is Tiffany Wen and I am Mentor Involvement Director of WYSE (Women and Youth Supporting Each Other). We are currently recruiting mentors for the 2008-2009 school year!

W.Y.S.E. is a curriculum based mentoring program for middle school girls at John Adams Middle School and LA Academy. We work with about 30 girls from each school and hold weekly sessions on a variety of topics (ie: sex, body image, healthy and unhealthy relationships, future options, discrimination, etc.) Each mentor is assigned 2 girls with whom they can form a closer relationship and communicate outside of the weekly school sessions. In addition, we form a cohesive group of mentors that bonds and supports one another.

Applications will be out starting April 1st and can be found at both the front desk of Topping (between April 1-14) and at Hall Building (between April 14-17) and on our website at http://www-scf.usc.edu/~wyse/. We will be tabling on Trousdale from April 2nd to April 16th from 10-2 pm and will be holding information sessions on April 10th at 5:00 pm and April 14th at 3:45 pm at Topping (room 205). Applications will be due on Thursday, April 17th at the front desk of Hall Building (HSH) behind the bookstore. I encourage you to visit us at those times!

The 6th Annual Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles announces its Call for Volunteers!

IFFLA 2008 is looking for volunteers to help with all aspects of preparation and on site organization leading up to and during this year's festival, which runs April 22-27 at ArcLight Hollywood, an elegant, state-of-the-art facility at Sunset and Vine in Hollywood. Volunteers will have the opportunity to experience first hand how a film festival comes together and to interact with a dynamic group of filmmakers whose films will be featured. Plus there will be opportunities to see some great films for free!
