We would like to thank all of you who made it for the HOLI event last Sunday. It was really a huge success and a moral booster for us. Your presence glorified the festival in the true meaning. If you have any pictures or videos for the event which you would like to share with us, do send us at india@usc.edu. We would be glad to put those on our website.

The Hunt starts outside leavey and consists of multiple phases where at the end of each phase you will be provided with a clue to the next target location.

 

The Team to reach the final destination first, WINS!!

Asha-LA invites you to read our winter newsletter (attached). Newsletters are windows to the activities and methods of Asha for Education and the current edition contains updates from two projects written by volunteers who have been associated with them for several years. The Basera-e-Tabassum project supports hostels for orphan children in violence hit areas of Jammu and Kashmir. The Street-to-school project aims to bring street children in the Kalighat area in Kolkata out of slums through education. In addition, the newsletter reports on a very successful 5k run that we organized in September'08, and plan to repeat this year.


A fun fact: Slumdog Millionaire's little Salim and Latika are first grade students at an Asha funded school in Bandra maintained by our partner Aseema.

We would like to remind you all about the HOLI festival which we are going to celebrate this Sunday @ Huntington Beach. We all are fortunate enough to celebrate our festival on a foreign land. What more can one ask for? We would like your presence so as to glorify the festival(See attached flyer for more details). Also, find below the list of the events which we are organizing just for you in this Semester.

Event: AIS & HSO PRESENT... HOLI!!! 

Date: Sunday, March 29th, 2009 (THIS Sunday!)

Time: 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

Venue: Huntington Beach (Buses will be provided on first-come, first-serve basis)

A reminder of this Sunday's Holi celebrations at Huntington Beach! Buses from USC will be provided (departing from behind Leavey Library) - due to an overwhelming response, bus seats will be filled on a first-come first-serve basis, so be sure to get there by 10 am! For those of you still on the fence, remember there will be FREE food and Holi colors at the beach!

Event: Soccer World Cup Auditions – 2nd tryout chance

Details: As you all know we had kept the 1st tryout for the Football(Soccer) WorldCup organized by International Students Association on last Saturday. We would like to keep 2nd tryouts for those who have missed it last time. We at AIS will be forming the team representing INDIA. "Association Of Indian Students" Spring Break Special - Soccer World Cup, Leadership Oppurtunity !!!

Soccer World Cup:-

We have the Football(Soccer) WorldCup coming up organized by International Students Association.  There will be teams on behalf of all the countries from which students have come to USC to study.  We at AIS will be forming the team representing INDIA. Leadership Opportunity:-

The Executive Board of the Association of Indian Students is looking for new senators. The senators are recruited now in order to have a smooth transition when the current board leaves. The senators get to learn how our association operates before becoming a part of the Executive Board in the coming semester.

LITERACY DAY – IMPACT THE LIFE OF A CHILD!

A local elementary school is inviting USC international students to participate in their Literacy Day on Friday morning, April 3rd.   The children are from lower income families and the purpose of Literacy Day is to encourage reading, help them to dream about going to college someday and give them the chance to meet someone from another country.

We would like to wish all of you out there a "Very Colorful Holi". We are all set to welcome everyone for the colourful Holi Celebrations on the 29th of March at the Huntington Beach. Holi marks the beginning of the Spring, a season of joy and hope. Let us all celebrate this Holi with fun and frolic and some great Indian food.

Details:  The largest and most spectacular passion play is brought to life through exciting drama, song and pageantry. The Easter pageant is famous for its lifelike recreation of earthquakes, thunder storms and lightening inside the all-glass building. Tickets are just $15.00 for International students and American Friends of Internationals (regularly up to $45.00). All seats are reserved. Research Participation Opportunity

Carly Mattefs is a second year Postsecondary Administration/ Student Affairs Masters student here at USC. He is looking to interview undergraduate international students and perhaps organize a focus group to investigate the international students' experiences on U.S. campuses, so that he can help improve services and support at our institution. This is a research project for classroom purposes only; therefore, no publishing of any findings. A coffee would be provided as an incentive for your time. Event: Hunger Clean-Up

Date: Apr 18th, 2009

Time: 9:00 am

The Cleanup is one of the largest national fundraising and community service a-thons in the country. Through the Cleanup, students will roll up their sleeves and grab paintbrushes, hammers, and rakes to volunteer at local hunger and homelessness relief agencies. Volunteer projects include painting local shelters, planting community gardens, repairing and cleaning food banks, and construction.

Event: OIS Diners Club March Event: Diners' Club Mexican Feast and Fiesta in Hollywood!!
Date:  Friday, 6th March, 2009
Time:  5:00pm (Meet in front of Leavey)
Cost: About $20 (just an estimate, price may vary)
Details: Sign-up is at the Office of International Services (OIS) at STU300.   You will need to provide a $5 deposit. The deposits will be returned at the event. Transportation will be via the USC Tram and the LA Metro ($1.25 fare each way).  Transportation back to USC will be at your own discretion, but suggestions and tips will be provided.
